computer-repair-speed-up-your-computer

Lets get that computer tuned-up (if you have an Apple computer, you might want to read about speeding up your Mac with Onyx). In this writing, I will not be talking about computer repair, but regular computer maintenance.

Performing these updates and running this software will keep your computer clean, secure, and fast

Overview: First we delete unecessary and temporary files from your computer. Then we organize the data on the drive. Next we protect the computer from spyware and scan for malware. Finally, we wrap up with operating system optimizations, patch security holes, and update software and/or drivers.

Using Defraggler to Speed Up Your Computer

Step 2: Defragmenting your computer’s hard drive using Defraggler.

You’ve heard of defragging your hard drive, but this tool is different. It allows you to quickly and simply defragment the important files – Something Windows built-in defragmentation tool doesn’t have.  Also, this tool is made by Piriform, the same authors of CCleaner, so you know the software is easy to use, contains no spyware, and best of all: free.

Microsoft Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft that provides updates for the Microsoft Windows operating system and its installed components. An optional feature provides updates for other Microsoft Windows software, such as Microsoft Office, Windows Live applications, and Microsoft Expression. Microsoft uses this tool to update driver components, patch security holes & exploits, and hardware/software optimizations. Basically put: You would be a fool not to use the update service.

Step 3: Speed Up Your Computer Using Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot S&D detects and removes spyware, cleans useage tracks, and protects from known-spyware threats. It is a great tool (just remember to update the software regularly). Even if you don’t see the symptoms, computers may still be infected, and spyware is getting more and more elusive with each day. It’s free, so there’s no harm in giving it a try.

Speed up your Apple or Mac with Onyx

How To: Speed Up Your Operating System with Onyx for OSX
apple-repair-onyx-leopard
Even Apple computers and laptops need to be cleaned out from time to time. Although there are a few different programs out there that basically perform the same function, CompuTechs+ prefers to use Onyx, for OSX 10.5 or later. (But, you can find an older version of onyx for mac at versiontracker.com.

So, what does onyx do for your computer or laptop? Onyx is pretty simple yet versatile. It has automated tasks built into the computer software, but you can also add custom tasks if you later decide. For this exercise, we will be limiting our tutorial to only one function of Onyx, the rest you use at your own risk.

Test an LCD Inverter Without Opening Your Laptop: Using a MultiMeter

lcd-inverter-test-multimeter1

So, your computer monitor is really dark or faint, and changing the brightness (using the ‘Fn’ key, for example) isn’t working. Now what to do? Simple. If you have a multimeter with a KHz option, use that to test the inverter. A cheap multimeter will register the KHz differently; if your multimeter KHz option only goes up to 20KHz, you may get a ’1′ as the result. This means the reading was ‘off the charts’…too high for the cheap multimeter to register the proper KHz.

Replacing an LCD Backlight

lcd-backlight

Replacing an LCD backlight is not an easy job. On a scale of 1 to 10 of DIY repair, I would rank it an 8.5. Replacing a dead backlight is a cost-efficient way of repairing an LCD without breaking the bank. Most backlights run $4.99-$15.00 (shipping included) on a site such as eBay, and some LCD’s even have two backlights, so make sure you order the right amount.  Otherwise, you might be waiting another week with a dark or dim screen, and nobody wants that.

CompuTechs+ does not recommend replacing the backlight yourself, but if you are determined, here are the steps:

Replacing an LCD Backlight is a requires extreme patience, as it is a fragile process. Not only is the light itself featherlight, it also contains the hazardous element mercury.

Computer Tune-Ups, Safety, and Updating

Updating your laptop or computer is an essential part of computer repair, and basic computer maintenance.  Let me start with this analogy: If you have a messy desk such as random soda cans, spills, papers, and everything basically strewn about, it can be difficult to get things done efficiently. The same goes for the operating system of your computer, and the hardware that runs that operating system. Lets start with the basics:

Many people avoid common maintenance of their computers, which slows down performance and decreases security.
